The police in Berbice will soon be implementing one-way traffic in the town of Rose Hall during peak hours to assist commuters who have been battling the ongoing congestion which runs through the Port Mourant Market.
According to the country’s Traffic Chief, Mahendra Singh, they decided on this following a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday.
Singh after the meeting held in the Central Corentyne area stated that, “recognizing that throughout the country due to the volume of vehicles that is traversing these spaces and persons have the opportunity to own and operate their own vehicles, Region Six cannot be left out of the equation when you consider they also have their own circumstances which would contribute to congestion” as such the regional leaders of the division came up with an idea.
“We worked with it, the regional traffic head tested the idea, and coming out with it today after much discussions with other parties we recognize that it is a workable solution specifically Rose Hall (town).”
According to Singh, due to the economic growth within the area it was important to develop a solution where traffic could flow unimpeded.
He announced, “The road will now facilitate traffic going west bound utilizing one of the streets not too far off the public road, regulate the traffic within specific timings of the day.”
He stated that this new measure will cater to the peak traffic hours that is between 7 am and 9.30 am and in the afternoons between 2 pm and 3.20 pm. The implementation process will be boosted by signs as well as traffic officers along the road way.
Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus pointed out that there are one-way roads being operated in the two other towns in Region Six, that is New Amsterdam and Skeldon.
He assured, “This would not hinder commercial vehicles… The one-way road would only cater for private and small vehicles that would be traversing during that period that has been recommended… So there is no hindrance for the commercial vehicles that want to go and offload their commodities at any time given.”
Meanwhile, Dave Budhu, Mayor of the Rose Hall Town stated that residents and commuters have constantly expressed their concerns over the flow of traffic in the town as it relates to the congestion.
Rose Hall town during peak hours is one of the most congested areas in the region with the traffic starting from along the Williamsburg, Corentyne main access road running through Rose Hall Town and then to the Port Mourant Market area.
According to Budhu, the municipality had engaged the regional police to come up with a workable solution to put systems in place by diverting “to solve this problem because this is an ongoing issue since Port Mourant Market is right next door to us. We all know how difficult it is to get through Rose Hall and Port Mourant especially during school times.”
The full implementation is expected to commence tomorrow morning.
