Government will be inviting tenders this week for the construction of a state-of-the-art facility to replace the current West Demerara Regional Hospital in Region Three, President Irfaan Ali announced on Friday during the commissioning of the new Zeelugt Primary School.
“The West Demerara Hospital has outgrown its purpose and no longer meets the modern, efficient, and reliable healthcare needs of the citizens of Region Three,” Ali stated, adding “That is why, next week, we’ll be launching a new tender for a new state-of-the-art hospital at West Demerara.”
He noted that Region Three is undergoing rapid growth in terms of its economy, population, and infrastructure, and as such, stressed the importance of a modern healthcare facility to support this development.
The West Demerara hospital has come under constant scrutiny for poor healthcare services, however, Ali assured that the government has already taken steps to improve services at the existing regional hospital.
The president disclosed that during the first four months of 2024, the West Demerara Regional Hospital performed 585 surgeries, a significant increase compared to the same period in 2021, when only 16 surgeries were conducted. He highlighted this achievement as a major milestone for the hospital, reflecting improvement in its healthcare services.
Ali also noted a 100 per cent reduction in patient referrals from the West Demerara Regional Hospital MA-2 months for stalker ex-boyfriend
