A twenty-seven-year-old man was yesterday remanded by Magistrate Fabayo Azore for knowingly importing ammunition at Muneshwer’s Wharf.

Leon Langford Ifill, of Princes Street, Georgetown, stood to answer to the charge before Magistrate Azore at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It was alleged that on September 4, 2024, at Muneshwer’s Wharf, he knowingly imported 496 9mm shells without proper authorization. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Quincy Lacon objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence. He told the court that on the day in question, officers from the Guyana Revenue Authority, along with ranks from the Guyana Police Force, in an intelligence-led operation, went to Muneshwer’s Wharf where they made contact with the defendant who was uplifting a barrel sent from the United States of America. A search was conducted on the said barrel in the presence of Ifill and it unearthed a black container with 496 9mm rounds of ammunition.

When the allegation was put to Ifill, he admitted to the police that he knew of the ammunition and was importing it for “arts and craft.” Lacon said that Ifill’s arrest was the result of a long intelligence-led operation and that the prosecution intends to produce video and audio evidence of Ifill’s admission. Considering the prosecutor’s objections and the facts of the matter, Magistrate Azore refused bail, and Ifill was remanded to prison until September 23, 2024, for statements.
