Dear Editor,
A respected analyst recently made waves when he suggested that Exxon might be favouring members of the opposition, in Guyana’s upcoming elections.
This caused much commotion in political and social circles. The reality is that Exxon wields tremendous soft power, and they can influence elections in many ways. One of the ways is by paying massive legal/management/advisor fees to preferred parties. Once received, these parties will have the ability to represent numerous members aligned with the opposition “pro bono.” Knowing that their legal needs might be met for free, citizens may be more favourably disposed to engage in nefarious and anti-government activities.
This is more reason why political entities in Guyana should disclose all their professional and financial interactions with Exxon.
Very truly,
Chitrakha Persaud
