Western Logistics seeking to collect food scraps from oil and gas ships

Western Logistics Guyana Inc has applied to the EPA for approval to gather food waste from oil and gas ships offshore and truck same to the Haags Bosch landfill on the East Bank Demerara.

A notice from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the last Sunday Chronicle said that the project will not significantly affect the environment and is therefore exempt from the requirement for an Environmental Impact Assessment. The notice said that any person who may be affected by the project may lodge an appeal against the  EPA’s decision within 30 days of the publication of the notice.

The project summary said that it will be focused on the collection, transport, and disposal of non-hazardous domestic waste (food scraps), from GYSBI (Guyana Shore Base Inc)/G-Port port vessels which will be transported using an open-back canter equipped with cargo nets, safety securing straps, and personnel to prevent waste spillage during transit. This move by Western Logistics Guyana INC is aimed at enhancing waste management efficiency in the oil and gas support sector. The initiative is spearheaded by Jaikerran Persaud.

Western Logistics will operate within the boundaries of Region Four, handling approximately 51 cubic meters of non-hazardous solid waste annually. This waste will be collected from various port locations and transported to the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill Site for disposal. The project is designed to run over a five-year period.

The waste management process involves the collection, The waste will be contained in jumbo bags that are both spill and waterproof.

Impact and Mitigation Measures

Given the nature of the project, potential environmental impacts have been identified, particularly concerning soil and water pollution. There is a risk of accidental discharge of waste which could adversely affect the Demerara River and the soil along the East Bank corridor. To mitigate these risks, Western Logistics will implement several measures:

1. Secure Containment: Food waste will be placed in durable, spill-proof jumbo bags that are securely tied and strapped with cargo nets to prevent leakage.

2. Safe Transport: The canter tray will feature high frame barriers to minimize movement and potential spillage of waste during transportation.

3. Environmental Care: Regular inspections and maintenance of transportation equipment will be carried out to ensure optimal operation and reduce any risk of environmental contamination.
