Western Logistics Guyana Inc has applied to the EPA for approval to gather food waste from oil and gas ships offshore and truck same to the Haags Bosch landfill on the East Bank Demerara.
A notice from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the last Sunday Chronicle said that the project will not significantly affect the environment and is therefore exempt from the requirement for an Environmental Impact Assessment. The notice said that any person who may be affected by the project may lodge an appeal against the EPA’s decision within 30 days of the publication of the notice.
The project summary said that it will be focused on the collection, transport, and disposal of non-hazardous domestic waste (food scraps), from GYSBI (Guyana Shore Base Inc)/G-Port port vessels which will be transported using an open-back canter equipped with cargo nets, safety securing straps, and personnel to prevent waste spillage during transit. This move by Western Logistics Guyana INC is aimed at enhancing waste management efficiency in the oil and gas support sector. The initiative is spearheaded by Jaikerran Persaud.
