Guyana opens Chess Olympiad campaign with defeat

Guyana’s campaign at the 45th edition of the Chess Olympiad currently being staged in Budapest, Hungary, got off to an underwhelming start with losses in the Open category.
The Guyanese quartet of Candidate Master (CM) Taffin Khan, FIDE Master (FM) Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo, and Keron Sandiford squared off against Hungarian ‘C’ Team opponents and conceded losses yesterday.
Guyana incurred a 0-4 loss. Khan went down to Alex Krstulovic in the first round, while Drayton was bested by Agoston Juhasz in the second stanza. Nathoo was then defeated by Gellert Karacsonya in the third round, with Sandiford falling to Tamas Vanczak in the fourth round.
Their next opponents are slated to be Jordan, and the Guyanese will be hoping to put on a better showing. The complete roster of the male team is Khan, Drayton, Sandiford, Nathoo, and lone junior Sachin Pitamber.
Their counterparts on the female team are Jessica Callender, Sasha Shariff, junior players Ciel Clement, Aditi Joshi, and Treskolé Archibald. The women’s team is captained by Grandmaster Georg Mohr of Slovenia, and the male team is captained by Guyanese player Ronuel Greenidge.
