Kako Cobras (Region #7) demolished Pakuri Jaguars (Region #4) by a 7-0 score in the women’s division when the Amerindian Heritage Games Football Championship kicked-off last night at the Everest Cricket Ground on Carifesta Avenue and Camp Street.
Led by four goals from Bascelia Williams and a brace from Latoya Williams, along with a solitary strike from Alleen Krammer, the Cobras completely outplayed Pakuri in a thoroughly one-sided affair. Up to press time, the men’s opener between Paramakatoi (Region #8) and Moraikobai (Region #5) was underway, with the latter leading 2-0 in the first half. Prior to the matches, an opening ceremony was conducted, which featured Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai and Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport Charles Ramson Jr.
Sukhai praised the 735 competing athletes for their dedication in participating in the annual championship, which lasts for the duration of five days, noting, “Our first people have shown their bravery, strength, and fortitude to be here today not only at Everest but in totality across this beautiful land of Guyana.”
She further stated that the event provides a platform for the indigenous community to showcase their athletic abilities across a variety of disciplines. The event culminates on Sunday at the same venue.
