Corentyne ten-day worker says she was strip-searched at Springlands Police Station

-commander denies claim

A Corentyne ten-day worker says she was strip-searched at the Springlands Police Station after being arrested on the accusation that he had been overpaid.

Drupwattie Seenarine also known as “Kavita” of Number 56 Village, Coren-tyne, yesterday explained that she worked five days for the month instead of ten and on Monday when she went to the Nos. 52 – 63 NDC office to receive her pay she had to be paid $20,000 which she received.

After receiving her payment, she then went to pay off some of her small debts and was heading home when she received a phone call from the office saying that there was an issue with the payment and she should return to the office with it.

She said she went back to the sellers she paid and collected the money and took back the entire $20,000 thinking that there was a general issue with the payments.

“When I go them tell me that I get $40,000 and got to give them back $20,000 but I show them that I only collect $20,000 which is what is correct and them get me waiting there and then them call police.”

The woman says that she was then taken to the Springlands Police Station where she was allegedly strip-searched by a female in a room at the station. She said, that the female did not have a uniform with tag but identified herself as a policewoman  to her. “I can recognize her if I see her back, I know is who.”

“Them strip me naked and then arrest me and put me from the bench to sit down that them go lock me up… I feel very bad about it, it’s hurtful, them strip me naked and nobody was there for me for my family. I have big children, I have grandchildren, I feel embarrassing, I come from a respectful family and a respectful community, I feel very bad about it.”

Commander of Region Six, Shiv-persaud Bacchus yesterday when contacted vehemently denied that the woman was strip-searched at the police station.

Additionally, Seenarine said that she was called to the office of the Regional Executive Officer, Narendra Persaud yesterday where “it seem like them done take one side they way them talking…”

She continued, “I keep telling them them na give me extra money, me go go station and go through all this for $20,000?”

On Monday the woman was placed on $30,000 bail pending an investigation into the matter, it is unclear whether the payer will be investigated as she is claiming the woman was overpaid and would have been responsible for that herself.
