Female cyclist struck dead by lorry on Lusignan embankment

Police are investigating an accident which claimed the life of an unidentified female of mixed ancestry yesterday on the Lusignan Railway Embankment Road, East Coast Demerara, in the vicinity of the Lusignan Prison.

Reports are that the accident which occurred at about 07.45 hours, involved a lorry, GAE 3066, driven by 29-year-old Brian Aron Lee of Burma, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.

Enquiries revealed that the lorry, operated by the Lee, was proceeding west along the Lusignan Railway Embankment Road, when someone shouted at him, alerting that a pedal cyclist was under the lorry.

Lee said that he immediately pulled over and stopped, came out his vehicle, and observed the victim, a woman, lying on the road motionless. Emergency services were summoned and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body is at the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and showed no traces of alcohol.
