James Lord, a 35-year-old labourer who allegedly stabbed his reputed wife to death on Sunday at Free and Easy, West Bank Demerara, is in police custody pending charges.
According to the Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Siwnarine, Lord was released from the West Demerara Hospital on Thursday night after being hospitalised for several days and is currently in custody at the Wales Police station. The commander confirmed that he is likely to be charged on Tuesday in court.
Dead is Alexis Roxanne Harris. Harris has left behind her family including two daughters, ages 12 and 11, and two sons, ages 5 and 8.
Enquiries revealed that Harris had been living with Lord and their children at Hill Foot. However, about two months ago, they had a misunderstanding during which she was allegedly assaulted by her reputed husband, who reportedly threatened to kill her. This caused Harris to move out of the home with her children, to her sister’s residence in Free and Easy.
At about midday on Sunday, Lord visited at the sister’s residence to see his children. At the time, Harris was on her cell phone and this angered the man, who took it away and broke it.
Harris then went and sat on the stairs outside, but Lord followed her, removed a knife from his haversack, and attempted to stab her. His nephew, Junior Lord, who was there at the time, heard the commotion and intervened. He attempted to take the knife from his uncle, who stabbed him in the abdomen.
The suspect then rushed at Harris and stabbed her in her left breast and right hand. She ran and collapsed into a nearby drain, while the suspect fled the scene to the sea dam area. He was later found with what was believed to be self-inflicted wounds and was hospitalized.
The deceased’s sister, Abiola Harris, told the Stabroek News yesterday that Junior was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and is recovering at home.
