A Venezuelan woman, Katiuska DeJesus Carias, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where she faced deportation proceedings.
The court heard from a representative of the Guyana Immigration Service that Carias had failed to present herself to the Chief Immigration Officer on March 14, to apply for an extension of her stay in the country. The immigration officer stated that the last valid documentation for Carias covered the period from January to July, but she had not applied for an extension before it expired.
With the assistance of an interpreter, Carias told the court that she possessed documents but was unaware of the requirement to reapply for an extension before her stay expired. She further explained that she has a son of Guyanese descent who attends school in Guyana.
Magistrate Azore inquired if Carias had someone to care for her son, to which she confirmed she did. The magistrate, finding no valid reason for her continued stay in Guyana, granted the application for her deportation.
