Ms. Lall’s actions on the alleged irregularities at GMC are laudable and should be supported by all

Dear Editor,

The recent revelations by Teshawna Lall, General Manager of the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), regarding the audit she initiated after detecting irregularities within her agency, demand the nation’s full support. In the Stabroek News article titled “GMC General Manager Says She Launched an Audit of Irregularities—Disputes Ministry’s Statement” dated September 12, 2024, Ms. Lall’s actions reflect a remarkable level of integrity and courage, especially in a bureaucratic environment where transparency is often elusive.

Ms. Lall, who holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in economics, has consistently demonstrated her commitment to effective management and accountability. Before joining the GMC, she held senior positions in both the private and public sectors, where her focus on financial transparency and operational efficiency set her apart as a dynamic leader. Her educational background, combined with her proven experience in corporate governance, makes her the right person to lead the GMC at this critical juncture.

The audit she launched, reportedly highlighting discrepancies between the GMC’s accounting department and the special projects unit, is not just a routine administrative exercise but a significant step toward accountability. The fact that she took the initiative and has been awaiting a decision from the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, demonstrates her commitment to ethical governance. Minister Mustapha, who is tasked with overseeing this crucial sector, must recognize the value of Ms. Lall’s efforts and act swiftly to address the issues raised. Her actions should not be dismissed as trivial but embraced as a model of leadership that shines a light through the often-murky waters of public-sector management.

If proven through documented evidence, such as email correspondence, Ms. Lall’s efforts should be widely celebrated. Her refusal to back down in the face of apparent opposition speaks to a sense of moral duty that we, as citizens, must applaud and protect. This is far from a “pit latrine” issue to be scuffed at—it is a pivotal moment in the battle for accountability within government institutions. Let us not allow this to be another episode lost in smoke and mirrors. Instead, we should stand firmly behind Ms. Lall and all those who dare to confront inefficiencies and irregularities, ensuring that sunlight continues to break through.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
