Mechanic, 22, shot dead in West Ruimveldt

Police are investigating the murder of Troy Rodrigues, called ‘Kelly’, a 23-year-old mechanic of Lot 165 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, which occurred at about 19.15 hours on Friday at Vlissengen Square, located between West Ruimveldt Front Road and Mandela Avenue, off Vlissengen Road.

According to a person  who lives nearby, he was in his backyard when he heard two loud explosions that sounded like gunshots. He looked over his fence to investigate and saw a man lying motionless on the road. He then ran out to the road where a small crowd had already gathered and observed Rodrigues lying in a pool of blood.

The victim was clad in a green tee-shirt, blue short pants, black slippers, with a black surgical mask on his face. The police were summoned and when investigators examined the body, a small circular wound was seen on his forehead. No spent shell was found.

The body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Another witness told the Sunday Stabroek that he was sitting outside his yard on a bench when Rodrigues passed him and made his way across the bridge spanning the nearby canal. It was then they heard a squib-like sound and observed Rodrigues running. “He run and fall down by the lantern post.”

So far, several persons in the area have been questioned. Arrests are yet to be made.
