-OPR probe launched
The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility is currently investigating a shooting that occurred on Saturday, at approximately 01:50 hrs on Robb Street, Georgetown, near a popular nightclub, where Cassel Nurse, a 27-year-old businessman of Freeman Street, North-East La Penitence, was injured.
According to a police press release, an anti-crime patrol led by a gazetted police officer was on duty and received information that two men riding motorcycles around the Bourda Market area were acting suspiciously.
Responding, the release said, the patrol confronted the two motorcyclists, who fled down Robb Street. The release said that the patrol pursued the men and one of them drew a firearm and discharged several rounds in the direction of the patrol. It added that one of the policemen drew his service pistol and fired several rounds at the shooter.
During the exchange of gunfire, the release said, the businessman, who was standing next to his parked car outside the nightclub, was shot in the right foot. He was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital for medical treatment, and his condition is regarded as stable.
