GCA/Friends of Cricket 2nd Division 2-Day competition

In the only Georgetown Cricket Association 2nd Division 2-day match over the weekend, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) club thrashed Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by an innings and 19 runs at the Malteenoes Ground. GDF had amassed 276/8 before declaring on Saturday with Joshua Jones smashing a fiery 41-ball 68 to set the tone for his side after Rockael Reddy had given the army men a solid start with 51 at the top. Reddy’s knock included 8 fours while Jones stroked 3 fours and seven sixes in his lower order assault.

On the other hand female left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz bagged a five-wicket haul for Malteenoes. She captured 5/62 from 14.5 overs.

By the end of Saturday, Malteenoes in response were on 57/3 with Shemroy Barrington and Tretlon Liverpool on 22 and 18 not out respectively.

Keith Simpson raked in 4/18 to help skittle Malteenoes for 122 all out.

When they resumed on Sunday, the remaining 7 wickets crumbled for the addition of a mere 78 runs with only Barrington standing up to the GDF bowlers, carving out 54 from 52 balls. He collected six fours and two maximums during his knock while Liverpool was the next best batter with a painstaking 27 from 65 deliveries. Jones, who could do no wrong, was the catalyst for Malteenoes’ collapse, capturing 5/42 from his pace bowling. During his 13 overs he bowled two maidens and received support from Keith Simpson who took 2/43. As Malteenoes did not get past the total required to make GDF bat again, the army men enforced the follow-on. This time around, the Malteenoes openers laid a solid foundation getting to 56 before losing their first wicket.

Adrian Hinds (40) and Collis Rimple (25) were solid but the latter’s dismissal sparked a collapse of epic proportions as the next 9 wickets tumbled for 66 runs, Malteenoes bowled out for 122 losing by an innings and 19 runs to hand GDF maximum points from the fixture.

This time around it was Simpson who ran through the Malteenoes batting line-up, returning miserly figures of 4/18 from 11.1 overs to give his side a well-earned victory.

The competition will continue next weekend with the fixtures to be announced in the coming days.
