A taxi driver appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he faced charges of misusing a communication device.
It is alleged that Travis Roberts used a communications device to transmit false information that endangered staff and guests at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown.
The incident allegedly occurred on September 1, at Camp Street, Georgetown, where Roberts reportedly used a telephone to make a bomb threat. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Roberts was represented by attorney-at-law Everton Singh-Lammy, who informed the court that his client had no prior criminal record and had been in police custody for over 100 hours. Lammy questioned the extended detention by the police and urged the court to consider this in his client’s favour.
The prosecutor however, opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the offence, given that it involved a bomb scare. Concerns were expressed that Roberts might not return for future court hearings if released on bail.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate McGusty granted bail with the condition that Roberts must report to the police station on the second and fourth Friday of each month until the case is concluded. The matter has been adjourned until October 9, for disclosure.
