Chinese construction firms should be doing these hospitals

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my concern about the ongoing bidding process for the construction of hospitals in Guyana, particularly in West Demerara, Linden, and Bartica. While transparency is essential, I believe a more efficient and cost-effective approach could be achieved by considering Chinese construction firms.

As the Guyana Chronicle article, “$30M upgrades for Linden, Bartica hospitals,” highlights, the need for improved healthcare infrastructure is urgent. Given the pressing nature of these projects, it is crucial to explore strategies that expedite construction without compromising quality.

Chinese construction firms have demonstrated exceptional capabilities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid construction of a 1,000-bed hospital in Wuhan, China, within a week, showcases their efficiency, expertise, and commitment to quality. This achievement was made possible through prefabricated modular design, advanced techniques, and a dedicated workforce.

Key Statistics:

Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital: Completed in 10 days, with a total area of 25,000 square meters.

Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital: Completed in 12 days, with a total area of 30,000 square meters.

Chinese firms have a proven track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects on time and within budget. By leveraging their experience and resources, Guyana could significantly accelerate the development of its healthcare infrastructure. Such a partnership could not only expedite construction but also potentially reduce costs and improve the overall quality of the facilities.

By prioritizing efficiency and effectiveness, we can ensure that these vital healthcare resources are made available to the people of Guyana as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
