Thirty-seven-year-old Jamal Rolox appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
It was alleged that on September 15, at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Rolox had in his possession a Springfield pistol, bearing serial number PB06197, along with 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Rolox was represented by attorney-at-law Everton Singh-Lammy, who argued that the firearm was found 10 feet away from his client, while the ammunition was discovered underneath a car. Lammy contended that Rolox had been trying to assist officers during the search, as the area where the ammunition was found had over 300 people at the time. However, Lammy said police refused to believe his client.
The prosecution however, objected to bail, presenting a statement that claimed Rolox placed the firearm on top of a car when police approached him. Both Lammy and Rolox denied this in court.
Despite the prosecution’s objections, Magistrate McGusty granted bail in the sum of $200,000, with the condition that Rolox report to the East La Penitence Police Station and lodge his passport. The matter was adjourned to October 9.
