At approximately 3:27 pm yesterday, machinery owned by AJM Enterprise came into contact with GPL’s L2 Transmission Line at Dumpsite Road, EBD, resulting in a widespread outage in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System.

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL)  in a statement yesterday reminded contractors who wish to work close to the company’s network to contact GPL at 226 2600 or 0475 at least 72 hours before commencing work.

Contractors who damage the company’s network will be held responsible for the cost of repairs, it said.

In all of the previous cases where contractors have damaged parts of the network there has been no information to the public about the cost they have had to pay.

The GPL statement came a day after two separate power outages occurred.

GPL CEO, Kesh Nandlall stated that vibrations from piling activities on the Railway Embankment at Hope on the East Coast Demerara could have been to blame.

“The blackouts occurred twice (Wednesday), and we suspect the ongoing piling exercise is the reason,” Nandlall stated. “We are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the stability of our infrastructure.”

Line L17 Transmission Line, which supplies electricity from the power ship in Berbice to communities from Good Hope and Columbia, was disrupted during the incidents.

Residents expressed frustration over the outages on Facebook, highlighting the inconvenience caused to homes and businesses alike.
