Dear Editor,

The organizers of Heritage Day celebration in Coboconk Karwartha, Lake Ontario Canada are happy to report that this year’s celebration was a success. The weather was amazing and attendance was magnificent with Guyanese of different backgrounds and denominations turning out in their numbers to celebrate with our Amer-indian brothers and sisters. Joining this year’s celebration were members of the Metis tribe from Northern Ontario.

The Hon. Consul General to Toronto Canada, Mani Singh, gave brief remarks and stressed the importance of celebrating our First Nation’s achievements. Also, under the ‘One Guyana’ slogan, he encouraged all in attendance to continue to contribute to Guyana’s development in whatever way possible. He commended the Heritage Commit-tee for the work they are doing to showcase Guyana to the wider world and to promote our rich culture and diversity. Present at the celebration were staff from the Guyana Consulate as well as members of the Association of Con-cerned Guyanese (ACG), the CG placed an honour on one of the Elders of the Lokono tribe, and he also presented tokens of appreciation to the executives of the Heritage Day celebration committee.

A wide variety of Guyanese delicacies were available to be enjoyed, including pepperpot, cassava bread, piwari, fly, achee coonoo, tuma pot, sugar cake, eggball, cassava pone, pholuri and many more. There were activities for every one including the kids, they had sack race, egg and spoon race and dancing competition. All in all, the day was well spent by everyone, and the culmination of the event was that several patrons thanked the committee members for organizing such a well planned and executed Heritage Day. An early venue will be identified for next year’s celebration and planning will commence shortly. This has been the fourth year since the heritage committee is organizing Heritage Day in different areas in Ontario, Canada.
