Guyana women defeat Vanuatu, men lose to Puerto Rico

Guyana recorded mixed results in the 45th edition of the Chess Olympiad continued in Budapest, Hungary, as the women’s team defeated Vanuatu and the men’s unit lost to Puerto Rico yesterday.

Guyana bested Vanuatu 3-1 in the women’s category. Jessica Callender drew with Ela Milfirer in the first round. Similarly, Sasha Shariff played to stalemate against Kaina Delrieu in the second round. Aditi Joshi then bested Lou-Anne Delrieu in the third stanza, while Treskole Archibald defeated Eliza Dennis in the fourth round. In the open division, Guyana lost to Puerto Rico 2.5-1.5 in round eight.

In the first match, Candidate Master Taffin Khan lost to Edgardo Ortiz. FIDE Master Anthony Drayton equalised for Guyana as he defeated Jaime Santiago in the second stanza. However, Keron Sandiford went down to Diego Irizarry in the third round, while Sachin Pitamber drew with Rafael Nunez in the fourth stanza.

Guyana will continue their campaign today against Mozambique in the women’s division, while the men will compete against Afghanistan.
