A radio host was yesterday morning busted with over $4.3m worth in marijuana during a road stop at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice and was remanded to prison after she opted to plead guilty to the offence.
Shaima Muna, 27, a radio host and singer of Charlestown, Georgetown, was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. She was found with 14.5 kgs of cannabis.
Muna yesterday appeared at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to her and she pleaded guilty.
She was remanded to prison until October 4, 2024 for a probation report.
Based on information gathered, around 5.47 am yesterday, a stop and search operation was conducted along the Weldaad Public Road during which a motor car bearing registration number PAB 6190 travelling towards Georgetown was stopped.
The police said that the “nervous disposition of the driver” along “with a high scent synonymous with marijuana emanating from the car aroused the ranks’ suspicion.”
As such, the officers requested to search the vehicle and the driver who was the only occupant.
A search of her belongings and person revealed nothing illegal. However, a search of the trunk of the motor car revealed one red and one blue travelling bag that contained parcels wrapped with transparent plastic containing suspected narcotics.
Muna was informed of the offence, arrested, and cautioned. The police said, “she admitted to owning the narcotics and claimed that her mother is in the hospital and she decided to take a chance to assist her with her medical bills.”
Muna was escorted to the Weldaad Police Station. The drug was weighed and amounted to 14kg 515 grams which has an estimated street value of $4, 354, 500.
