The Guyanese Open and Women Chess teams suffered heavy losses in their round 9 matches yesterday at the 45th Chess Olympiad currently being staged in Budapest, Hungary.

After losing 1.5-2.5 to Puerto Rico on Thursday, the Guyana Open Chess team could not redeem themselves as they were blanked out 4-0 by Afghanistan.

FIDE Master (FM) Anthony Drayton came up against Ahmad Mehrad and could not produce the goods, surrendering a point while Loris Nathoo, Keron Sandiford and Sachin Pitamber also lost their games. Hameedullah Hairary took care of Nathoo while Ahmad Kans dispatched Sandiford and Wais Abdul Khaliq secured the flawless win with victory over Pitamber.

Today, the Guyanese open team will face Brunei in round 10.

Similarly, the Guyanese women almost suffered a complete blowout at the hands of Mozambique but Sasha Sharif’s draw against Kalina Efentakis spared them the indignity. However, Jessica Callendar, Ciel Clement and Treskole Archibald all saw defeat courtesy of Vania Vilhete, Neusa Castro and Chineva Sandramo respectively. The Guyanese girls will look to redeem themselves today when they come up against Liberia.
