The Guyana Open and Women’s teams at the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, faltered in their respective round 10 matches yesterday, as they lost to Brunei (Open) and Liberia, respectively.
The men put up a fight but fell short, ceding victory to Brunei 1.5-2.5.
Anthony Drayton went down to Omar Hafizon in the first round. However, Loris Nathoo equalised at 1-1 for Guyana, as he defeated Soon Wei Yee in the second stanza.
Brunei retook the lead as Keron Sandiford was then defeated by Rodney Guan, while Sachin Pitamber and Ahmad Akmal drew in the fourth round.
In the women’s division, Guyana went down to Liberia 1-3.
Sasha Shariff lost to Sackie Georgina in the opening round. However, Aditi Joshi continued her impressive displays as she defeated N. Meleh in the second set to level proceedings.
Liberia seized control of the contest in the third round as Desiree Clement lost to Karyah Abigail. Treskole Archibald also went down K. Princess in the fourth round.
The Open Team will now face Sierra Leone today, while the women will come up against Bermuda in the 11th round as the Olympiad draws to a close.
