Bids opened for countrywide street lighting project

The Ministry of Public Works has received billion dollar bids for the supply of lights for the ambitious plan to light up the roads countrywide, with some being fully solar while others will be tied to the national grid.

The bids were opened last week at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board and saw tenders from 26 companies.

Divided into four lots, the lights will be distributed across the country as the government aims to make the streets brighter.

“This tender is to deal with the 100,000 streetlights across the country. It includes supplying the poles, lines, lights- some solar and others to be used directly from the grid…,” Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill told the Stabroek News.

“It is to deal with not just having a street light but the spin offs in terms of improving the quality of life …in terms of providing safety when driving on the highways, improving security, providing lighting to villages, communities etcetera all across the country,” he added.

He said that while the gas to energy project will produce additional power, solar lights were also being procured and that the government was “not waiting until we get capacity but starting to prepare now”.
