Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd on Sunday signed a Joint Communique with Marko Đurić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, establishing diplomatic relations between Guyana and Serbia.

A release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Foreign Ministers also engaged in a bilateral discussion on areas of mutual interest to initiate a cooperation agenda between the two countries; including food security and agriculture, ICT, and training and capacity building.

Đurić, the release said, conveyed his Government’s support to Guyana on the Border Controversy case with Venezuela currently before the International Court of Justice.

Todd is attending the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is led by President Irfaan Ali.

Serbia was part of the former Yugoslavia with which Guyana had strong ties.
