Ministry probing fatality at Cane Grove rice mill

The Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Department is investigating a workplace fatality that occurred on Friday, September 20, 2024 at Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara.

A release from the Ministry said that the deceased was identified as  28-year-old labourer, Jermaine Hercules of Lot 4 Airy Hall, Mahaicony, who worked with a contractor who was engaged in conducting repairs to the roof of a rice mill.

According to reports, Hercules was repairing leaking sheets on the roof of A. Cayume Hakh & Sons, Rice Millers & Exporters when he fell 30 feet to the ground and was taken to the Mahaicony hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Following these reports, Occupational Safety and Health Officer responsible for East Coast Demerara, Johana Vaughn conducted a preliminary investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident and make recommendations to prevent similar occurrences.

At last count, workplace deaths this year were higher than for the corresponding period last year.
