At about 6.50 pm yesterday, Terry Thorman, a 23-year-old mason from Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara who is a suspect in two murders turned himself in at the Leonora Police Station in the presence of his attorney.
A statement from the police said that Thorman was told of an allegation that he on 2024/09/21 at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, murdered Arvinda Roopram and Kalamadeen Nazir. He was then cautioned, and he replied saying: “I have nothing to do with the death of those two men”.
Also, he declined to give a written statement. He was arrested and placed into custody, pending further investigation.
Earlier yesterday, Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh conducted post-mortem examinations with dissection at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour on the bodies of Roopram and Nazir.
Roopram, a 25-year-old from Lot 52 Stewartville, WCD was identified by his reputed wife Kesha Richmond, a 25-year-old teacher. On completion, Dr. Singh gave the cause of death as multiple incised wounds.
Nazir, a 30-year-old from Lot 1 Stewartsville, WCD was identified by his father Mohammed Nazir. Dr. Singh gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.
The police said on Saturday that enquiries disclosed that at about 2.50 am, Nazir, Roopram and two suspects had a scuffle that ensued from a heated argument. Roopram sustained several stab wounds on his body, and Nazir suffered one stab wound to his upper abdomen.
The two suspects, Alex Amsterdam, called ‘Mario’, a 28-year-old security guard, suffered one stab wound to his upper abdomen, while the second suspect, Thorman, escaped from the scene.
Nazir and Roopram were escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by ranks of the Anti-Crime Patrol, where they were examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival. Amsterdam was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he is a patient under police guard. His condition is critical.
The scene was processed and a black-handle ‘Rambo’ knife was recovered. Several persons were questioned and useful information received as investigations continue.
