Another 62 residents from Region Five were yesterday issued Steel and Cement Housing Subsidy vouchers, each valued at $225,000, to support the construction of their homes.
A release from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) said that the voucher distribution was led by Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues at the Regional Housing Office at Fort Wellington. The release said that Rodrigues emphasized that this initiative, conceptualized by President Irfaan Ali, is designed to alleviate the financial strain on landowners who have the property but face challenges in moving forward with building their homes.
“The goal is to ensure that people move beyond landownership and become homeownership,” said the Minister.
With over 36,000 house lots allocated over the past four years, Rodrigues noted the importance of such programmes across the country.
One beneficiary, Deochand Singh, shared his gratitude, stating that the voucher will help him provide a better life for his family, including his 8- and 10-year-old children.
“I feel happy. I think it’s a great initiative from the government and it will assist us in building our home,” said Singh.
Another recipient, Shellita Bissoon, expressed her joy, noting that this assistance brings her closer to fulfilling her dream of homeownership.
Under the initiative, individuals constructing homes valued at $6 million or less receive steel and one sling of cement for their foundation, while those with homes estimated between $6 million and $25 million benefit from two slings of cement, the release said.
