Vergenoegen captured the best gym award, while Shakquain James of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) copped the best boxer accolade when the inaugural West Demerara leg of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) U-16 Championship concluded at the community’s rice mill tarmac.
This was disclosed by a press release from the GBA. According to the correspondence, the West Demerara unit captured the overall title owing to an impressive record of three wins and a defeat.
Ezekiel Witwright defeated Teaka Narine of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) via decision in the 39-41Kg schoolboys category, while Jason Fileen bested Trendy Forde of (PRBG) in the 45-47Kg schoolboys encounter. In the junior division, Keyon Britton made light work of Isiah Nurse of RHJ in their 48-50Kg encounter. The only blemish for the home side transpired when Rayon France was defeated by Roopesh Balgobin of Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ) via decision in the 34-36Kg schoolboys category. The success of the club led to trainer Clifton Moore walking away with the best coach award. Meanwhile, James bested Terron Wintz via decision in their 63.5-67Kg bout in the Youth Division.
The release stated, “The acquisition of the new boxing ring, which was facilitated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, allowed the GBA the opportunity to begin the decentralisation process of the sport with the staging of the event in the West Demerara region. The annual initiative has formed the backbone of GBA’s nursery programme, and with the attainment of the new ring, will allow the association to utilise the older equipment to be transported to the various venues going forward.”
The next leg of the event will occur in the mining town of Linden, while Berbice is pencilled to make its debut after. Below is the complete list of results.
