Carbon credits, REDD+ Initiatives not in best interest of Indigenous peoples

-APA tells Climate Week forum

The Amerindian Peoples Association (APA) has reiterated its discontent with the conduct of the sale of carbon credits which it says fails to positively involve the Indigenous peoples and communities, despite being beneficial.

The APA noted in a release that its Advocacy and Policy Officer, Nicholas Peters, on Tuesday, voiced concerns about the inadequate level of consultation and involvement of Indigenous peoples and communities in the development and implementation of carbon credit sales within Jurisdictional REDD+ (J-REDD+) initiatives in Guyana.

The Policy Officer made these remarks during a panel discussion in Manhattan, New York, for Climate Week 2024, under the theme, “Social Integrity within Voluntary Carbon Markets: Challenges and Opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.”
