Following a defeat and a draw in their most recent international encounters, the Golden Jaguars have dropped two spots to secure the 156th position following the official publication of the October FIFA Men’s Rankings Table.

The team drops from its previous tally of 1026.61 points to 1019.99.

Guyana commenced their League A debut campaign in the CONCACAF Nations League with a 1-3 home loss to arch-rival Suriname on September 5th. They then drew 2-2 away to Martinique four days later.

To date, Guyana in 2024 boasts a record of two wins, five losses, and a draw. Guyana defeated Cambodia 4-1 and Belize 3-1, but also suffered defeats against Cape Verde [0-1], Trinidad and Tobago [1-2, 0-2], and Panama [0-2].

The Guyanese are currently sandwiched between 155th-ranked Yemen and 157th-placed Hong Kong. The Golden Jaguar’s best ever ranking was 86th, which was achieved in 2010, while their worst position was 185th in 2004.

Overall, Guyana’s average ranking has been 151st. The Golden Jaguars have an opportunity to significantly improve their current status when they resume their campaign in League A of the CONCACAF Nations League in October.

The Guyanese will host Guatemala on October 11th before concluding their group campaign with the return leg against Suriname four days later.

The top two finishers from the group, which also comprises Costa Rica and Guadeloupe, will advance to the quarterfinal section in November.

The FIFA Men’s World Ranking, which was introduced in 1992, is a mechanism that was created to rank the competing nations in association football. Argentina is the number-ranked nation. The teams are ranked based on their respective game results in full FIFA-recognised international matches.

Eight countries, notably Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, have held the top spot. Since August 2018, the ranking system has adopted the Elo rating structure, which is used in chess and is based on the strengths of the competing parties.
