The body of Dionson Charlie, a 32-year-old miner who went missing following a boat mishap on Monday was found floating in the vicinity of Bush Cow Backdam Landing on Wednesday.
Police say an examination revealed a laceration, approximately 3 cm in length to the back of his head, a swollen face with blood near the nostrils, and signs of decomposition.
The police report stated that due to the lack of a mortuary facilities in the area, the body was buried in a shallow grave. Arrangements have been made with the Government Pathologist for exhumation, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for 2024-10-01. The investigation is ongoing.
Charlie, who was a resident of Jawalla Village, Upper Mazaruni, left ‘Bush Cow’ Backdam for Kako village at about 11:00hrs on Monday to conduct business. Police say upon his return, he reportedly collided with a floating object which caused him to fall into the Mazaruni River.
Reports are that Learvia Henry, a resident of Abbou village, reported that he heard a loud crashing sound from the river and raised an alarm, to which neighbours responded and found a wooden boat floating unattended but they did not locate Charlie.
On Tuesday, the police said Inspector Hunte, other ranks and residents formed a search party.
