Labour Minister in meeting on helping migrants with transition

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton along with Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), Natecia Garraway yesterday received a courtesy call from representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) IOM/ILO to continue discussions on how migrants can be supported in their transition to Guyana.

A release from the Ministry of Labour said that the visiting delegation included Juan Francisco Espinosa, Special Advisor to the IOM,  Maria-Alexandra Bassermann, Regional Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion Coordinator, IOM-UN, Eraina Yaw, Deputy Regional Coordination Officer for the Caribbean and Chief of Mission for Guyana among others.

The meeting, which was at the ministry’s Brickdam office, focused on addressing migration-related issues particularly the Venezuelan migrant population in the country, training and development, health and safety opportunities and being educated on the country’s Labour laws.

Hamilton pledged his and by extension, the Government of Guyana’s support to partner with both parties to address this matter in a meaningful way.
