Man gets 26 years for rape

Ronaldo Chapman, also known as `Packie’, was yesterday sentenced to 26 years in prison on two counts of rape by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the High Court in Demerara.

He had been found guilty of raping a woman at gunpoint on March 14, 2023.

According to court records, Chapman assaulted the victim after a confrontation with her boyfriend. During the altercation, Chapman used a gun to strike the boyfriend before chasing him through an alley, leaving  the victim alone.  Chapman then assaulted her.

Chapman was later apprehended in a hideout in Wisroc, Linden where a gunfight with police ensued before his capture. He had previous convictions for narcotics possession and illegal firearm and ammunition offences, for which he was already serving time. Notably, Chapman committed the rape while evading authorities in connection with his earlier crimes.

Justice Barlow, during sentencing yesterday, cited the seriousness of the offences and Chapman’s criminal history as aggravating factors. She handed down a 26-year sentence, with the two rape counts to be served concurrently. In addition, the judge ordered that Chapman receive access to academic, vocational, and behaviour modification programes while in prison.
