Restarting international adoptions is certainly positive news for families

Dear Editor,

I was pleased to read in the Kaieteur News on September 27th that “Guyana will soon restart international adoptions,” as stated by Minister Persaud. This is certainly positive news for families seeking to bring their loved ones into their care.

However, I must express my disappointment regarding my personal experience. I have been attempting to adopt my niece for over two years, but due to the government’s suspension of international adoptions, my efforts were thwarted. At the time I initiated the process, my niece was 16 years old. She is now 18, and I am left wondering whether her age will hinder my chances of finally adopting her, even with the new policy in place.

I would greatly appreciate clarification on whether the government’s new adoption policies will allow for the adoption of my niece, despite her now being an adult. Enclosed is a copy of a previous letter I sent regarding my case.

Sincerely,

Anthony Pantlitz
