The Leonora Market Road in Region Three will be rehabilitated into an asphalt surface in the coming week, according to a release on Friday from the Ministry of Housing and Water.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, accompanied by engineers and senior staff members, inspected the road highlighting its significance for vendors and as the primary access route for contractors involved in the development of the new Leonora Housing Scheme.
The release explained that the deterioration of the road had made it challenging to traverse and adversely impacted residents, primarily due to increased dust levels, especially when vehicles were transiting the roadway. Subsequent to his inspection, Croal announced that some 200 metres of asphalt road will be constructed through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
“By next week, we will commence work to have this done,” Croal assured, noting that the project will be completed in the following weeks. The upgrades are expected to significantly benefit residents and those accessing the new housing scheme. With Saturday afternoons being particularly busy for vendors, the Minister emphasised that the new road will also serve them until their relocation to the new market.
Chairman of the Stewartville/Cornelia Ida Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Sheik Samad, welcomed the initiative, noting that the road upgrades will enhance both the community and the local economy, the release added.
