Daniel Rodrigues, a 31-year-old miner from Port Kaituma, North West District was arrested on 2024-09-25 and charged on Friday with possession of narcotics and the assault of a woman.
The police said yesterday that the defendant appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court via Zoom conference from Port Kaituma Police Station before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh, where the charge was read to him.
The defendant pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined $20,000 or one month’s imprisonment on each of the charges, a total of $40,000 or two months imprisonment if the fines are not paid.
The police said that at about 8.20 pm on September 25th, 2024, Rodrigues and 22-year-old Anita Henry were at the Port Kaituma Water Front, North West District, consuming alcohol when Anita left to go visit her sister. Rodrigues became annoyed and followed the victim, grabbed onto her right hand and dealt her several slaps about her face.
The victim then went to the Port Kaituma Police Station and reported the assault. Police arrested Rodrigues, who had a haversack in his possession which contained twenty-seven zip-lock bags containing cannabis, which, when weighed, amounted to 23.4 grams.
