Ministry can do us all a great service by fixing the basics in schools

Dear Editor,

With expected enthusiasm the leadership of the Ministry of Education (MoE) has once again shared its new vision for the school system. Cheerleading squads and marching bands are now on the cards. Yet fire safety, safe tap water, functioning toilets with adequate water pressure and toilet paper continue to evade minimal health and safety standards. Lack of janitorial supplies has also been an ongoing concern. Let’s give the children and school teachers something to cheer about.

Enthusiasm placed in addressing these fundamental needs of our nation’s school children will be well received. The leadership of the MoE can do us all a great service by fixing the basics. A safe and healthy environment at school does allow for increased focus and better performance. It is difficult to concentrate when the toilet next to class room has recently experienced a stink bomb that cannot leave. The free morning meals do create quite the atmosphere. Just do the math, it adds up!
