It was the battle of the Johns on Sunday last as the 22nd edition of the Victor Macedo Memorial Cycling Road Race pedalled off along the roadways of the East Coast of Demerara.

However, as has been the case in recent years, it was Briton John who won that battle, as he fended off a strong challenge from Jamual John to triumph and claim the top podium spot in the Open Category of the race.

During the race, which began at the JV Singh and Thomas Street Junctions before heading up to Halfway Tree and coming back to Liliendaal to finish, Briton managed to claim three primes (sprint prizes) of the eight on offer, while Jamual also collected three, with the other two going to Robin Persaud of KFC Evolution.

Briton finished the race in two hours 30 minutes 18 seconds to claim the win, while Jamual finished just behind in two hours 31 minutes 2 seconds. They were followed by Aaron Newton, Robin Persaud, Kwame Ridley, and Segun Hubbard, who placed third to sixth in that exact order.

Meanwhile, Robin Persaud was the winner of the Masters 45+ category, relegating Ridley to second place, while Hubbard and Ralph Williams were third and fourth, respectively.

Alexander Leung was his usual impressive self, winning the junior event ahead of Daniel Jaing (second) and Alex Newton (third).

Mark Spencer was the first Masters Over 50 cyclist to cross the finish line, followed by Deon David and Ian Jackson in second and third places.

Dinesh Sookhai was the only juvenile rider present. The event, held in memory of the late Victor Macedo, was sponsored by Macedo Transportation Services.
