Because of the high number of pupils single, classrooms are now accommodating two classes at Mon Repos Primary

Dear Editor,

Overtime, we have witnessed the PPP government accomplishments in building new schools across the country, to ensure our children have access to education. I wish to applaud the Government for its effort but, I question the neglect at existing schools with inadequate classrooms, deplorable washrooms, etc.

I’m no expert on education and classroom environment, but even the brainless can summarise that classrooms need to possess an atmosphere conducive for learning and teaching to be effective. As a parent, my observations at the Mon Repos Primary School, on the East Coast of Demerara, where single classrooms are now accommodating two classes and because of the high number of pupils crammed into one classroom, in my opinion, is unfavourable to learning and it has become a classroom of distraction and confusion to both pupils and teachers.

It’s a concern that requires revisiting to eliminate the barriers to a good learning environment, as it is not sympathetic to the wellbeing of our children. Personal and collective well-being for our children is vital for their successful individual growth, but I’m afraid this current situation will impact negatively. Imagine having two teachers using one chalk board, each on the other side and both teaching according to timetable, but with a different approach and methods, a recipe for distraction and confusion.

A positive classroom environment is essential for successful teaching and learning, and builds emotional and social connections between pupils and teachers making them feel comfortable, respected and valued, but after witnessing this situation, I’m very concerned for my child’s educational well-being at this particular public institution. This adverse situation our children have to endure, can hamper their focus, but imagine how difficult it must be for our teachers who find themselves in these situation without a voice.

I would like to recommend to the Ministry of Education, to construct a separate block to house the Grade 6 classes, thus leaving more room in the existing building to accommodate the high influx of pupils at this institution. Editor, I’m optimistic that this letter will reach those in authority and immediate action will be taken to remedy same soonest.

Sincerely,
