A young East Canje Berbice fisherman is missing and feared dead after he reportedly fell off a fishing boat while plying his trade in Suriname.
Nezam Jahoor, 20, of Lot 52 Adelphi New Area, East Canje Berbice reportedly fell from the boat while he and his crew members were fishing in Suriname waters.
Stabroek News was told that on Sunday September 29, the crew was operating in Paramaribo, Suriname and while hauling in fishing nets Jahoor suddenly fell overboard.
According to relatives, they were told that Jahoor was standing on an ice box when the crew heard a splash after which they noticed he had somehow fallen overboard.
They said that they immediately attempted to rescue him by throwing two ropes into the water, however, due to the condition of the water which was reportedly rough at the time the crew was unable to rescue Jahoor.
Jahoor’s brother, Akram Jahoor was then informed by the boat captain on Monday about what had transpired.
Relatives said that they were told that the boat captain had commenced search operations.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday the family was informed that a body was located, however, after travelling over to Suriname it was discovered that it was not Jahoor’s body.
Jahoor’s family yesterday said that they were unsure if a search would be continuing.
