President Irfaan Ali says that all new koker doors will be stainless steel.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) said that he made the announcement on Wednesday after a visit to the site of a collapsed koker door at Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara.
DPI said that Ali coordinated a team from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), GuySuCo, and GAICO Engineering to promptly install temporary stop logs to prevent water from overtopping.
Once the tide subsides, engineers will replace the temporary solution with a sustainable and permanent metal door and concrete structures.
“That is how we are doing all kokers now…New kokers will all be stainless steel. That will avoid this [from recurring],” President Ali said.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha told Stabroek News yesterday that the new koker door is being fabricated.
He said that residents did not experience flooding when the koker door failed on Wednesday.
