Plumber, AC technician held over gun after police chase

Omar Cliffe, a 24-year-old plumber from William Street, Kitty, and Cort Williams, a 23-year-old AC technician from ‘B’ Field Sophia, were arrested at about 23:30 hrs on Wednesday after they were found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The police said in a statement that the two were arrested by ranks from the Alberttown Police Station, who were on patrol in a force motor vehicle at the time. The ranks were on William Street, Kitty heading west when they observed two men on a motorcycle with registration #CN 8462 heading in the same direction.

On seeing the Police patrol, the statement said that the motorcycle stopped, and the two men dismounted and began to run, heading north into a passageway on William Street.

Cort Williams

The ranks chased behind the two males, who later gave their names as Omar Cliffe and Cort Williams. While running, the ranks observed  Cliffe take out what appeared to be a firearm from the waist of his pants and attempt to throw it away. A loud explosion that sounded like a gunshot was then heard, and Cliffe fell to the ground with the firearm in his hand.

He was apprehended, and what appeared to be blood was observed on his right foot. Police took possession of the firearm, and the two suspects were arrested. The area was checked and a suspected .40 spent shell was found.

The two suspects were taken to Alberttown Police Station along with the suspected firearm, and they were placed into custody.

The suspected firearm was examined, and it was found to be a .40 pistol. There were also five .40 rounds of ammunition.

The firearm, ammunition and spent shell were marked, placed in separate evidence bags and lodged to be taken to the ballistics section for analysis.

Cliffe was escorted to the GPHC for medical attention under police guard. He sustained a graze from the firearm which went off after he attempted to throw it away, police said. Investigations are ongoing.
