Accountability is an alien concept in Guyana

Dear Editor,

So we had the embarrassment of a two-hour blackout at our National Stadium. For the benefit of readers, when World Cup Cricket was proposed,  as Mayor, I settled details with Mr. C. Singh to combine GFC and GCC and make a portion of Merriman Mall available. As plans were being worked out, the Government announced that the preferred venue would be Providence.  The reasons are not obscure but may be similar to the siting of the Berbice River bridge.

I recalled suggesting to the powers that be, that the new stadium should be hooked up to the National Grid in addition to a separate independent facility  to produce power for the National Stadium. The big ones dismissed the idea saying they knew what they were doing.

I had written elsewhere on the arrogance of the Minister responsible for Sports and Culture. Beyond that, no one in the Government hierarchy will be held responsible for this embarrassment. In the same way, is the Ivor Thom issue being swept under the carpet.

In a letter published last month, referring to the regular blackouts in my area, I expressed the view that this Government has an abundance of money and therefore the acquisition of equipment, machines, generators, etc. cannot be the problem. The problem is a Government that seemed unable to recognise that the problem is putting in place a management team based on competence.

But so long as the big ones are happy, who cares?  Somebody is calling for accountability. Are we serious? In Guyana, accountability is an alien concept.

Guyana Quo Vadis?

Yours faithfully,
