It is a sad day when those in authority see no wrong in turning a blind eye to corruption and the pilfering of our national resources

Dear Editor,

The most recent press conference held by the General Secretary (GS) of the PPP/C was very eye opening. He spoke of the corrupt acts of the previous government who are now the opposition. He also stated that the current administration decided not to pursue an investigation and charges against the last administration even though the allegations were serious, but instead he decided that they should move on. This was in response to the charges of corruption being raised by the opposition over acts being committed during this current administration.

The entire situation reaks of corruption. A clear sign that both sides of the political aisle are trying to avoid being caught by not investigating and charging each other. The clear loser of this arrangement is the Guyanese population. If the office of the DPP, the AG chambers and the Judiciary are determined to stamp out corruption then charges will still be brought against those committing crimes independent of political affiliation. For the GS of the current government to be able to decide not to pursue criminal investigations is very concerning, especially when the opposition has raised claims that the GS has also participated in such acts.

Mention that all Guyanese should be grateful for whatever Exxon decides to give us is another clear indication of poor leadership and questionable management. The Exxon contract will never be cleaned up, they will never be replaced by those who will pay their fair share of taxes, and the government will never do business in a way that does not bring the scrutiny of the CIA and Scotland Yard if this approach is allowed to remain. Illegal smuggling of gold, has recently been mentioned in the headlines and is under investigation by the U.S. Government. The words of the GS will attract even more attention from overseas authorities into the dealings of the Guyanese Government.

It is a sad day when those in authority see no wrong it turning a blind eye to the pilfering of our national resources. It is now up to the Judiciary to take the initiative and maintain its independence in the investigation of the serious allegations being raised by both sides of the political divide.

Sincerely,
