Case of flogging of QC students under legal review – ministry

Months after numerous efforts to obtain updates on the Queen’s College flogging incident, the Ministry of Education yesterday said that the matter is now under legal review and was therefore sub judice.

It is unclear if this signifies that a charge has been brought against the teacher involved.

Despite multiple attempts to speak directly with the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, Stabroek News has been unable to secure a comment. Yesterday, as Stabroek News attempted to approach her it was informed by the minister’s Public Relations Officer, Anara Khan, that the case is now under legal review, and that the minister would not be doing any interviews on it.

The incident in question occurred on May 16 when a senior teacher at Queen’s College allegedly flogged ten students. The incident sparked widespread condemnation and attracted the attention of child protection organizations.

A recommendation on the matter had been sent by the Queen’s College Board of Governors to the Ministry of Education. This recommendation was not disclosed.
