GPL urges customers to have prepaid meters upgraded

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has issued an urgent notice to some 18, 000 customers using prepaid meters that there are only four weeks remaining before the critical October 31 deadline for them to upgrade their devices.

According to a GPL release yesterday, this necessary transition is part of a worldwide upgrade from ‘Version 4’ to ‘Version 6’ of the Standard Transfer Specification.

Divisional Director of Customer Services at GPL, Rhonda La Fargue, explained that the upgrade process began at the end of April with roughly 42,000 customers having upgradable meters, and it is designed to ensure a smooth transition for all eligible prepaid meters. She warned that customers who do not upgrade by the deadline, will face consequences. Their meters will no longer accept tokens, potentially leading to power loss.
