Mahaicony bests Airy Hall in East Coast football derby

Mahaicony Lions bested Airy Hall by a 2-1 score when the East Coast Demerara Senior Men’s League continued on Friday evening at the Buxton Community Centre ground.

All three conversions occurred in the second stanza following a scoreless first half interval.

Mark Roberts opened the scoring in the 75th minute for the Lions unit, uncorking a powerful strike from outside the centre of the penalty area that sailed into the back of the net.

He would then make his presence felt once more in the 81st minute to secure his brace and double his team’s advantage.

It was a goal of individual brilliance as Roberts skipped past several defenders following a midfield run that concluded inside the penalty area as he slotted past the advancing goalkeeper.

Airy Hall would eventually record a consolation goal in the form of Omar Williams in the 84th minute. The conversion emanated from a midfield passing combination, which was capped off by Roberts, who slammed his effort past the goalkeeper from inside the 18-yard box.

With the result, Mahaicony climbs into fourth place on 11 points, while Airy Hall drops to second place and remains on 15 points.

Meanwhile, the Buxton Stars defeated the Victoria Kings via walkover after the latter failed to take the playing area at the scheduled time. Buxton Stars were awarded a 2-0 outcome and the three points.

Due to the outcome, the unbeaten Buxton Stars unit moves onto 15 points and climbs atop the standings owing to their superior goal differential. On the other hand, the Victoria Kings remain on three points but drop to seventh place due to their inferior goal differential.
